An Au Pair is a young person from overseas who lives with an Australian Host Family and helps with childcare and light child-related household tasks. In return, the family provides accommodation, meals and weekly pocket money.

An Au Pair’s main responsibility is childcare. Duties may include school runs, preparing children’s meals, playtime, helping with daily routines, tidying children’s rooms and doing children’s laundry.

An Au Pair can assist with light household tasks related to the children, such as tidying their rooms, making their beds and helping with meals or laundry. An Au Pair is not a general cleaner or housekeeper.

An AIFS Au Pair can provide up to 35 hours of childcare and related support each week. Host Families should provide at least one and a half days off each week and agree on a clear schedule before the placement begins.

Most AIFS Au Pair placements last between six and nine months. The exact length of the placement is agreed between the Host Family and Au Pair before arrival.

AIFS Au Pairs must have at least 200 hours of referenced childcare experience. They also complete an interview and provide a police check, medical check and at least two references that are verified by our team.

Host Families pay AIFS service and placement fees. Families also provide weekly pocket money, accommodation, meals, agreed leave and a completion bonus. Visit our Fees page for current pricing and inclusions.
